Descriptions of Breakout Session Classes
Issues in Childhood
Lindsey Stone
This session will focus on issues for the individual with special needs who are younger than 18, She will talk about such topics as school issues, advocacy, the initial shock of diagosis, support, and involvement in activites. This class will be most benefical to those with children 13 and younger.
Adulthood stages
Janette Williams-Smith
This session will focus on issues for the individual with special needs who are over 18, or those loved ones who are wanting to prepare for the future. She will focus on such issues as puberty, romantic relationships, adovacy for the child as they reach adulthood, guardianship, and activities for the adult with special needs. This class would be most beneficial for those caregivers with later aged teenagers (14 and up).
Alzheimer's/Dementia
Kathey Green
This session will be for the the family member who is a caregiver for a loved one with dementia or alzheimer's. Such topics will include, Kathey's journey as the caregiver, being the child of someone with special needs,the stuggles and successes of her journey, and balancing the lifestyle.
